"Bazar Abbas: Recovery Lab of Port Said"

Urban Narratives

Our exploration delves into the realm of urban narratives, collective memory, and the intricate interplay of conflict, recovery, and heritage interpretation. Within Port Said's Arab and European districts, we conduct site-specific studies, focusing on how years of conflict and warfare have shaped local urban narratives and influenced heritage interpretations. A focal point of our investigation is the Timber Veranda, known as Taracina, an integral component of Port Said's architectural heritage. Through this journey, we aim to unravel stories of the past and yet to initiate a process of engaging the local community in heritage interpretation and protection.

Urban Recovery

The urban core of Port Said and Bazar Abbas stand as our canvas for the practice of urban recovery, where questions of conflict and segregation are met with innovative solutions. Collaborating with our young Egyptian trainees, we embrace the principles of integrated urban conservation and development, placing community-led approaches at the forefront. Our emphasis lies on empowering local communities as primary stakeholders in shaping their urban environment. By weaving together spatial planning, historical preservation, and community engagement, we aim to discuss sustainable, inclusive urban scenarios that resonate with the values and aspirations of those who call these neighbourhoods home.

Pilot Restoration

Through the restoration of two wooden verandas in Bazar Abbas, we embark on a mission to cultivate restoration skills and empower local communities. Our vision for Bazar Abbas represents a pilot rehabilitation project that captures the essence of the city. By reviving the splendour of timber balcony structures, we aim to set the stage for a comprehensive recovery of the area. This endeavour serves as a catalyst, breathing life into the historic core of Port Said and setting a precedent for future rehabilitation and enhancement.

Tourism

Venturing into the realm of tourism planning, our project delves into localised and sustainable strategies that spotlight Port Said's unique charm. Our approach involves training young locals in tourism planning and management, shaping a tourism experience that is both sustainable and attuned to the local ethos. Through capacity building and skill development, we aim to explore innovative solutions to showcase the city's essence while respecting its heritage and fostering a locally sensitive approach.
